What is a Thermomix and Why You Should Buy One

In This Post You’ll Learn:

What is a Thermomix?

If you’ve been in the world of cooking appliances for a while, you’ve probably heard of the Thermomix. With the impending launch of Thermomix TM7, I know a lot of you might be wondering what the fuss is all about and whether this appliance is something you want or need.

What exactly is it, and why should you consider investing in one? As an independent user, recipe developer, and owner of multiple Thermomixes (as well as a Magimix), I’m here to give you an honest take on this powerful kitchen appliance.

I am NOT a consultant or employed (or paid) by Thermomix or Vorwerk for my recipes, posts, or if you choose to buy one. This is just a big-time foodie who has tried many appliances and cooks a lot, giving you an honest review of why you might like a Thermomix of your very own.

A Bit of History

The first Thermomix (or Bimby), created by Vorwerk, has been evolving since the 1970s. My journey started in 2014, and over the years, I’ve owned six models, including the TM21, TM3000, TM31, TM5, TM6, and Thermomix TM7 (launching in April for pre-sales this year). Each version has brought improvements in speed, functionality, and convenience, making it a must-have in my kitchen.

What Does a Thermomix Do?

A Thermomix is an all-in-one thermal cooking appliance that can:

  • Blend
  • Chop
  • Knead
  • Weigh ingredients
  • Steam
  • Sous vide
  • Slow cook
  • Ferment
  • Cook at precise temperatures

Essentially, it’s like having a chef’s assistant that does all the hard work for you. Whether you’re making soups, sauces, doughs, or even full meals, the Thermomix simplifies the process.

Why I Love Mine (And Why You Might Too)

As a professional recipe developer, I don’t use the Guided Cooking feature, but for home cooks, it’s a fantastic way to learn new recipes. The digital guided cooking recipe platform, Cookidoo, currently has over 70, 000 recipes for users to access with a monthly subscription. Covering all kinds of dietary needs it can be very useful for home cooks, learning cooks, young cooks, and also perfect for those of you who need some inspiration and step-by-step cooking.

For me, the Thermomix is invaluable because it lets me create everything from scratch with absolute precision. I do not use the guided cooking feature but instead create recipes for cookbooks, eBooks, and users of the Mad Creations website. My style of cooking and diet needs are met better by creating my own recipes and then also sharing them in various formats for you to use if looking for healthy low carb recipes. Whether you’re a beginner, a seasoned home cook, or a professional chef, this machine has something to offer.

Benefits of Owning a Thermomix

For me, it is a huge time-saving and confidence that you can mostly set and forget and let the “thermie” do all the work. I can cook a curry, for example, and still go and have a shower, or read a book, or get work done, while the appliance does all the work for me. Overall, I find less food wastage and better use of ingredients I have on hand, making cooking from scratch easy. The best part is less splattering all over cooktops (and me) and the easy clean-up at the end of it all. The convenience and confidence in knowing how safe and easy cooking/mixing is makes this appliance my Number 1 every day of the week.

The Thermomix is perfect for:

Saves Time & Effort – No more stirring for hours or cleaning multiple dishes.

Precise Cooking – Perfect for delicate recipes like custards and chocolate tempering.

Space-Saving – Replaces multiple appliances, making it great for small kitchens.

Healthy Cooking – Encourages making food from scratch with fresh ingredients.

Accessibility – Ideal for people with disabilities, as it reduces manual effort in cooking.

How Much Does a Thermomix Cost?

The average retail cost will depend on where you are located. Here in Australia, the new Thermomix TM7 is expected to retail at $2649 AUD, with presales starting in April 2025. With all the previous models you can choose to purchase second hand, often picking up a bargain on your local Facebook Marketplace or from friends who haven’t ised it as much as they expected.

Is it worth the cost? In my opinion, absolutely! Many oven or cooktop brands retail for more than a Thermomix and they don’t do half of what you can do with this appliance. An iPhone costs almost the same, and many people upgrade each year! They hold their resale better than most appliances too. But mostly, if you cook, this appliance will help you save on buying other appliances, save you loads of time, and save you money by cooking more efficiently without the risk of over-cooking, burning, and wasting food. In fact, it will help you process leftovers into useful sauces, stock pastes, garnishes and meals.

Thermomix vs. Magimix – Which is Better?

Since I also own a Magimix Cook Expert, I can confidently say that both machines have their pros and cons. The Magimix has a larger bowl and is fantastic for making larger batches, but I find the Thermomix superior in terms of precision, ease of use, and recipe variety. Thermomix also has strong community support and a larger recipe database, if needed.
